Topography and Climate
Andong takes up the northern center of Gyeongsangbukdo Province and is the center of transportation and commerce. Andong borders Yeongyang and Cheongsong to the east, Yecheon to the west, Uiseong to the south, and Yeongju and Bonghwa to the north. The Taebaeksam Mountain Range stretches out to form a vein on the edge of the city, while the Nakdonggang River flows mightily from the north to the south to merge with the Banbyeoncheon creating a healthy river system for tourists and locals to enjoy in all part of Andong.
The southwest of the city is relatively flat, but the northeast has rough terrains of mountains. Most of the farmlands are located on the mountains and Pungsan Plain is one of the extremely few plains. The soil is a rich clay texture to the south of the Nakdonggang River and is increasingly sandy to the north.
The temperature changes very dramatically and the air is foggy 73 days of the year. The monsoon blows from northwest in winter and northwest in summer. The annual mean temperature is 12.1℃. The rainfall is about 1,179.8mm a year and 820.8mm between June and September, which takes about 69.5% of entire year.
